Water Lilies, GFT
2 – 5 February, 2020
Céline Sciamma’s debut is a perceptive coming of age drama that captures all the anguish and yearning of adolescence. Three very different 15-year-old girls, Marie, Floriane and Anne, are all desperate for a place in the local synchronised swimming team. Their paths cross in the corridors at the pool, where love and desire erupt for the first time, bringing them together and tearing them apart. Brilliantly acted by its young cast (including an early performance by Adèle Haenel, who stars in Sciamma’s new film Portrait of a Lady on Fire) this is a refreshing take on familiar themes.
The screening on Wednesday 5 February will be preceded by an introduction to Céline Sciamma’s films from Lauren Clarke of Femspectives.
