Tomboy at GFT

For the August Queer Cinema Sundays screening, GFT showing the second feature by director Celine Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Petite Maman) which offers a tender exploration of youth and gender identity.
Upon arriving in a new neighbourhood on the outskirts of Paris one summer before school starts, ten-year-old Laure embarks on a journey of gender exploration when a local girl mistakes her for a boy. Deciding not to correct her, Laure plays along, choosing to be known as Mickael to new friends.
Led with a stunning performance by Zoé Héran, Tomboy evokes the nostalgia of youthful summer afternoons, playground games and endless swimming while quietly observing the young protagonist’s inner turmoil and the contradictory experiences of childhood.
