The Thai Bar and Restaurant Glasgow review by Pat Byrne

The Thai Restaurant is an award winning restaurant in Shawlands in Glasgow’s Southside. It was my first experience of a Thai Restaurant and I was very impressed.
I went along for lunch with my brother Liam and we were greeted by a smiling, Ben. She suggested we select a table, brought the menus and let us know she would be happy to explain anything about the dishes. It was a great start to our outing having such a courteous welcome.
TheThai menu (Download PDF) is extensive so it took us quite some time to peruse and decide what to order. Liam opted for fish cakes to start and I chose Tom Yum soup, I don’t normally have soup as a starter but it sounded intriguing: “Hot and sour flavour . The broth consists of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, tomatoes and crushed red chillies.’

Tom Yum Soup
The dish looked like a work of art and could not have been more delicious. I’ve never tried anything quite like it – a real taste of the exotic. You can choose to have tofu, chicken or prawns added – I opted for the prawns, which were delightfully tender.
To follow I chose one of the Specials – Chicken and Cashew Nuts – Stir fried chicken with sweet peppers, onion, chesnuts and crunchy cashew nuts. Served with Jasmine Rice.
Another beautifully presented, appetising dish, with great flavours and textures. The portion was also exceptionally generous.
Liam enjoyed a more traditional Green Thai Curry.
The menu offers a great range of choices including traditional dishes such as Pad Thai and the Green Curry (Kaeng Khiao Wan) . “The Traditional Thai green curry with coconut milk, mixed pepper, courgette, small aubergines, kaffir lime leaves, and sweet basil. Served with jasmine rice.” You can choose to have this with Prawn, Chicken, Tofu or Beef.
Both the food and the service were exceptional. Patcha, our waitress was very pleasant and efficient and everything was served promptly with a smile.
The atmosphere is calm and airy and it’s a particularly spacious restaurant with a large window looking onto the street. It’s right beside Pollokshields East Train Station so very handy for a trip to the Southside. I would absolutely recommend an excursion to The Thai.
