The Favourite, GFT
30 December, 2018
2 – 17 January, 2019
Living up to its name, this dark and riotously entertaining period drama is currently the movie to beat as we enter awards season. Featuring three phenomenal performances from Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, it centres on the grotesque goings-on of the 18th Century court of Queen Anne (Colman). The capricious and highly unpredictable Anne is very taken with new servant Abigail (Stone), whose presence becomes an increasing threat to Anne’s close confidante Lady Sarah (Weisz). Imagine All About Eve directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and you have some idea of what to expect from The Favourite. Blackhearted, beautifully filmed and guaranteed to provoke both laughter and uncomfortable squirming, it’s an unmissable treat.
