Peace Officer GFT 28 February, 2016
Winner of the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award at SXSW.
GFT / Sun 28 Feb, 2016 (16.00)
Winner of the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award at SXSW, Peace Officer couldn’t be a more timely documentary. Despite countless deadly shootings, America remains committed to the right to bear arms and local police forces are increasingly trained to act like a branch of the military. Sheriff William ‘Dub’ Lawrence established the first SWAT team in Utah in 1975. 30 years later a SWAT team shot and killed his son-in-law in a chaotic standoff. Unhappy with the official version of events, Lawrence undertook his own painstaking investigation of the case and other police shootings. The result is a hard-hitting, utterly fascinating perspective on the state of the nation.
We’re delighted to welcome producer Dave Lawrence for a Q&A session following the screening on Sunday 28 Feb.
