Monsters and Men, Glasgow Film Theatre
1 – 7 February, 2019
Three parallel storylines interweave around a central incident – the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white cop – in this Brooklyn-set drama. A young father films the shooting on his phone and finds himself targeted by police; a black policeman struggles to deal with the fallout of his colleagues’ actions; a young athlete has his eyes opened by the activism the incident inspires. Strong performances from an excellent cast (including Blackkklansman’s John David Washington) are complemented by an atmospheric score to create a reflective mood. This is a compelling portrait of the fraught present moment in American society.
