Liv Ullmann’s adaptation of August Strindberg’s 1888 play stars Jessica Chastain as Miss Julie, the daughter of a wealthy baron. When she seduces John (Colin Farrell), her father’s valet, the liaison threatens to disrupt the social order. Relocating the action from late 19th-century Sweden to an estate in Ireland, the plot unravels over the course of one evening – Midsummer’s Eve. With a standout performance from Samantha Morton as John’s fiancée, Kathleen, this is a powerful study of class, hierarchy, and sexual politics.
