Considered to be Almodóvar’s first gay film, Law of Desire focuses on a complex love triangle between three men involved in the Spanish film industry, and a parallel story of a struggling transsexual actor who finds herself caring for her niece. Following a night of passion, and a brutal act of jealousy, the two stories come together in unpredictable and tragic ways. Almodóvar cannily uses the framework of a Hollywood melodrama to tell his story, whilst deconstructing typical familial stereotypes with gay and transsexual characters.
