Green Book at Glasgow Film Theatre
1 – 14 February, 2019
When Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), an Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class African-American pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger—as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. Inspired by the true story, Lip’s son Nick Vallelonga co-wrote the script, based on stories his father told him growing up. Green Book won the People’s Choice Award at Toronto Film Festival, and was recently named as Best Film by The National Board of Review.
