The Book Thief follows a young girl, Liesel, who is left by her fleeing mother in Nazi Germany with foster parents Hans and Rosa. Liesel forms a close bond with Hans, who teaches her to read a book stolen from her infant brother’s graveside: the first of many stolen books. Reading also bonds her with the mysterious young man that Hans and Rosa bring into their home one day, to live in secrecy under the stairs like a fairytale creature.
