25 October – 3 November, 2016
Daniel Blake (comedian Dave Johns in his feature debut) is a middle-aged carpenter from Newcastle, who after suffering a heart attack and deemed unfit to work, must rely on the state for help for the first time. As he comes up against the absurdities of the British welfare system, he befriends a single mother who is facing her own struggles on the breadline. British master Ken Loach won his second Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival for this timely, emphatic and often humorous tale of the profound injustices of life in contemporary Britain.
