Breathless at GFT
Various dates 4 – 31 January, 2026
Small-time crook Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo), styling himself after Humphrey Bogart, panics during a car theft and fatally shoots a policeman. On the run, he hides out with his aspiring journalist girlfriend, Patricia (Jean Seberg), in her Paris apartment while trying to scrape together enough cash for an escape to Italy. But once Patricia discovers he’s wanted for murder, her loyalty wavers.
Dedicated to the American B-movie studio Monogram Pictures, Jean-Luc Godard’s genre-shattering debut remains a cornerstone of the French New Wave and one of cinema’s most influential works. Seberg and Belmondo’s defining performances set a new template for cinematic cool, while Raoul Coutard’s handheld black-and-white cinematography captures Paris in all its restless energy. Cécile Decugis’s radical editing, especially her pioneering use of jump cuts, changed film language forever.
Part of CineMasters: Jean-Luc Godard season.
