Bluebeard’s Castle + The Sorcerer’s Apprentice + Recorded Introduction
Saturday 23 December, 2023 at 2.30 p.m.
Described by Bertrand Tavernier as ‘the missing link that connects Tales of Hoffman and Peeping Tom’, Bluebeard’s Castle is one of Michael Powell’s lost masterpieces – a stunning adaptation of Béla Bartok’s expressionist opera. Starring Norman Foster as the murderous Bluebeard and Ana Raquel Satre as his doomed wife, Judith, it combines outstanding performances with spectacular production designs (by Academy Award-winner Hein Heckroth).
The film will screen alongside The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a 13 minute ballet short directed by Powell and performed by the Frankfurt Opera with Sonia Arova as the solo dancer.
The screening will have a recorded introduction by Freelance Film and Culture Writer Lillian Crawford, looking at Michael Powell’s career after Peeping Tom, his working relationship with Hein Heckroth and more.
