Arguably Denis’ darkest film, Bastards was inspired by French sex ring scandals that exposed some of the country’s most wealthy and powerful men. Returning to Paris after a family tragedy, Marco moves into a huge apartment and furnishes it with nothing but a mattress. From here, he watches his neighbour Chiara, who guarantees the security of her child through a relationship with a man who wears a charming smile to conceal true evil.
