Thursday, April 18, 2013 2:00pm – 3.30 p.m.

Part of the Aye Write! Glasgow’s Book Festival Creative Writing Programme in association with University of Strathclyde, Caledonian University and University of Glasgow

Writers have always used and re-used certain tropes when creating fictional detectives. Explore these tropes and see how the greats of the genre have used familiar plot twists and stereotypes that we so often associate with crime fiction to create truly great characters. Discover how some recent authors have made these”cliches” their own in new and surprising ways. Then we’ll apply the conversation to a few detectives of our own.

Graphic Novels

Aye Write celebrates the world of Graphic Novels this year with two events from Scottish writers.
Denise Mina talks about her graphic novel adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Sunday 14 April. Denise, known for her crime novels such as Resolution and The End of The Wasp Season, jumped in at the deep end of Graphic Novels by writing for the Hellblazer series and now presents her adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s smash hit novel.

The legendary Mark Millar needs no introduction – the Superman, Avengers, Spiderman and X-Men series have all benefitted from his writing but he comes to Aye Write! to talk about his own Kick-Ass and Hit Girl series on Monday 15 April.

Celebrating Harry Papadopoulos

Ken McCluskey of The Bluebells is joined by Clare Grogan to celebrate the work of Glasgow photographer Harry Papadopoulos.

Harry’s work was ubiquitous in the late 70s early 80s and his shots of bands and musicians have been collected by Ken McCluskey in the book, What Presence.
If you’ve admired photos of Altered Images, Orange Juice or Aztec Camera from this era then chances are it was Mr Papadopoulos behind the camera.
Ken and Clare present an evening filled with nostalgia, pictures and music on Wednesday 17 April.

New Event

The Cambridge Companion to Scottish Literature
20 April 3-4pm
In this special event we celebrate a brand new publication,  The Cambridge Companion to Scottish Literature, (edited by Gerard Carruthers and Liam McIlvaney) which takes a fresh look at Scotland’s writers and writing, from ‘pre-Scottish’ literatures to the present day. The book covers all the major periods – the Dark Ages, Medieval, Renaissance, Enlightenment, the ‘Age of Scott’, Victorian, Modernism, post-Modernism and the ‘post-Nation’ era – and the big names in Scottish Literature (including Robert Burns, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Hugh MacDiarmid and Muriel Spark), but also considers areas that may have not been associated with Scottish Literature previously; Gothic writing, Crime Fiction and writing in other parts of the English and Scots-speaking world.
