Windows In The West by Avril Paton

I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF AVRIL PATONS WORK FOR A FEW YEARS NOW THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAT WARMS MY HEART, WINDOWS IN THE WEST IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAINTING I HAVE EVER SEEN, WHEN I FIRST VISITED SALTOUN STREET I STOOD IN THE STREET FACING THE BUILDING AND COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I SAW IT WAS FANTASTIC I AM NOW A REGULAR VISITOR. MY HUSBAND DOESN’T NEED TO ASK WHERE I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE WINDOWS WINS EVERY TIME I’M FASCINATED BY HER WORK IT BRINGS GREAT JOY INTO MY LIFE AND OTHERS WHEN THEY SEE MY WINDOWS IN THE WEST AT HOME THEY JUST HAVE TO STOP AND ENJOY IT, THANKYOU MISS PATON.

Avrils work caught my attention the first time I saw ‘Ritas Find’. I enjoy watching visitors to my house taking in every detail of the prints I own. There is so much going on in her pictures. You can smell the winters night and the chimney smoke in Windows in the West. A truly great artist.

I feel Avril Paton is a very talented painter. I chose her painting ‘ Windows on the West’ to write about in a school essay. I seen her magnificant painting when i visited the galleries of modern art and i feel the detail and atmosphere of the painting are second to none. I wrote, ” I find it sensational that paton was able to capture the unique character of a building whilst letting your imagination run wild about the characters within that building.” ” Every induvidual window portrays a different story, this is an incredible feature ” I thorougly enjoyed writing about this sensational piece and i feel Avril Paton is an incredible artist with a sesational talent, she is defenitley my favourite artist and her works are incredible.

I just love windows in the west. I told my art teacher that i was going to do built enviroment for my higher art expressive unit in stead of portraiure and still ife. (built enviroment was not an official option at my school) i’m going to think of that will do justice to the painting. byeee

YOUR IMPRESSIVE ARTICLE ON AVRIL PATON HAS SHED MORE INFORMATIVE LIGHT ON THE BREATHTAKING “WINDOWS IN THE WEST”. MS. PATON IS WITHOUT QUESTION MY FAVOURITE SCOTTISH ARTIST, AND UNDOUBTEDLY THE CREAM OF CONTEMPORARY SCOTTISH ARTISTS. IT IS A TRIBUTE TO THE ARTIST HERSELF THE WAY IN WHICH SHE HAS BROUGHT WARMTH, CHARM, AND LIFE TO WHAT IS BASICALLY A GLASGOW TENEMENT. I VISITED THE BUILDING IN GLASGOW’S WEST END RECENTLY , AND I WAS DISAPPOINTED AS THERE WERE NO LIGHTS IN THE WINDOWS, NO CHARACTERS GOING ABOUT THEIR DAILY BUSINESS, AND VERY LITTLE EVIDENCE OF THE BUSY TENEMENT AS PORTRAYED IN THE MAGNIFICENT PICTURE. HOWEVER, THIS HAS ONLY ADDED TO MY APPRECIATION OF THE PICTURE, AND THE SKILL OF MISS PATON IN REPRESENTING THE LIFE OF A GLASGOW TENEMENT ONTO CANVAS. I WOULD DEARLY LOVE TO HEAR FROM MORE PEOPLE WHO HAVE A SIMILAR PASSION FOR MS. PATON’S WORK. KINDEST REGARDS, GARY SMOLLEN.

I have the prints of Windows in the West, Dusk,Blue Room and Topping out day. I have owned them for two years and every time I look at them I see something different in the picture I never noticed before. I came across Avril Paton by chance as my Mother ( god rest) was from Glasgow and I just wonder as I look into the pictures if my mother ever seen any of this slender while in Scotland. These prints continue to take my breath away… I hope someday to visit Scotland.

I think Avrils new work is fantastic, I love all her paintings and I was not sure if I would like her new style but having been to her recent exhibition I love all her paintings. It is a shame that windows in the west did not make it as scotlands favourite painting but never mind she is still brilliant.

As an ex-pat Glaswegian there is nothing better to capture our city and its uniqueness than “windows” and the “blue room”. More than one tear (of homesickness) has come to the eye of other ex-pat glaswegian friends visiting us as they gaze enchanted into the pictures.

Avril Paton is a treasure !.. As an ex Auld Reekie man I wonder if She would ever consider having a look at some of Edinburghs classic tenement buildings ? I would suggest Marchmont Road, Thirlestane road and Warrender Park Crescent and Road. I will be In Scotland next year and will call on my favourite Art shop in Raeburn Place. Regards, Tony Moore

I now have 8 of Avril’s print’s here in my home in North Yorkshire, I’m originally from Glasgow. When I sold my previous house, the surveyors who came round always stopped to look at all of Avril’s pictures, they were as captivated as me. Got another birthday coming up so fingers crossed I get another, lang may yer lum reek, Avril!

Hi. I bought the painting of the tenement building in the mid 90’s when I was home on holiday in Clydebank. I loved it as soon as I saw it and it hangs in my living room where I enjoy it more and more every day. I have lived in Vancouver since 1949 have been home to live at two different periods and go home at least every other year. Notice I still call it home! My cousin Hugh from Bearsden who is now married and living in Salem, Oregon (since 2000) loves the same painting too so I am going to pass on the web site to him. I did try to find one for him when I was in Glasgow in 2003 but I guess I looked in the wrong shops. Next time I go home-hopefully this year 2005- I will look for more of Avril’s wonderful paintings. Wishing all the best to Avril and all Glaswegians. Anne Monahan

My entire family is from glasgow/paisley, My father was a professional goal keeper for afew scottish teams and eventually moved to USA were I was born. We know live in Canada and go back to Scotland as much as possible, I have just come back from a 2 week holiday and my sister-inlaw pointed one of Avrils painting out to me in a window one day and thought I might like her work and thought It would be great to take one home to my Mother who misses living in Scotland and would love one of the paintings, as soon as I saw Avrils work I fell inlove with it and went into the store and bought afew of them right away, when I got home my mother said I wish I had got you to get me this painting I saw the last time I was there, it was 2 weeks before Christmas and when I gave her her gift of Avrils she was over the moon with joy, I plan on buying as much as I can and would love to be kept inmind when knew ones come out. I have just met up with the love of my life after 16 years apart, he bought me a print of DUSK, and all our West End memories are held there. It made me search out other prints, Avril’s work is fantastic. More life and character than a camera could ever achieve. The West End was THE place to be!
