a northern soul

2 October, 2018 – 6.15 p.m.

Following 2015’s award-winning A Syrian Love Story, director Sean McAllister returned to his hometown, Hull, as creative director of the opening of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Reflecting on changes to a city hit by cuts in public spending and divided by Brexit, Sean was drawn to the fringes of town.

He met Steve Arnott, a struggling warehouse worker trying to find a way to bring creativity and culture to the disadvantaged kids of the city. The film follows Steve over the course of the year as he struggles to balance his dream with his day-to-day work and life responsibilities. Asking questions about the role of culture in all areas of society, this is a timely and heartfelt documentary.

Followed by a Q&A with Steve Arnott and director Sean McAllister.
