Anton Corbijn’s adaptation of John le Carré’s novel is a smart, subtle and confident thriller about the identity of a half-Chechen, half-Russian immigrant named Issa Karpov, who finds himself wanted by both German and US security agencies. Arriving tortured and homeless in Hamburg, the illegal immigrant takes refuge with a young human rights lawyer (Rachel McAdams), and the two soon find themselves embroiled in global political affairs as the two agencies race against one another.
