City of God
Sunday 19 May, 2024
One of the world’s 25 Best Films as rated on the IMDb Top 250, Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s Brazilian crime story City of God has recently been remastered for its 21st anniversary and will return to GFT for a special screening as part of their Anniversary Programme in May.
In the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket (Phellipe Haagensen) is a budding photographer who documents the increasing drug-related violence of his neighbourhood. José ‘Zé’ Pequeno (Douglas Silva) is an ambitious drug dealer who uses Rocket and his photos as a way to increase his fame as a turf war erupts with his rival, ‘Knockout Ned’ (Leandro Firmino da Hora). The film was shot on location in Rio’s poorest neighbourhoods.
The screening will have a short introduction by Sam Gonçalves, a documentary filmmaker, writer and community organiser based in Glasgow and originally from Brazil.
In Portuguese with English subtitles.
