Significant additions to The Hunterian collection of Scottish art: Winifred and Margaret Davidson recent bequests and gifts
Over the last few decades, the Davidson family has generously handed over to The Hunterian a significant portion of its collection of works by Scottish artists, originally built by William Davidson (1861-1945) and his wife, Jean Steel Reid (1866-1945). Together with their two surviving sons, Hamish and Michael, and their granddaughters Winifred and Margaret, William and Jean were instrumental in preserving the legacy of their friends Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. In the last decade or so Winifred and Margaret have left over 40 paintings and drawings by some of the most accomplished early 20th century Scottish artists to The Hunterian, mostly collected by their grandparents. Together, they are a tangible reminder of William, Jean and their family’s support not just of Margaret and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, but also of several of their contemporaries.
This talk will focus on some of the highlights within this group, from Mackintosh and Macdonald watercolours to oil paintings by John Quinton Pringle, Edward Atkinson Hornel or George Henry to Harrington Mann and Bessie Macnicol.
