Young Soul Rebels 4k Restoration and Discussion
Monday 23 October, 2023 8 p.m.
A landmark for Black – and Queer – British film, Isaac Julien’s iconic, beautifully crafted 1991 period piece has been newly remastered by the BFI.
A convincing picture of late 70s London, youth culture meets identity politics in this part-thriller, part-queer love story set days before the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. The hedonistic world of pirate DJs Chris and Caz is shattered when a close friend is killed while cruising in the local park. The black community suspect the National Front, but the police have other ideas.
This year Isaac Julien’s video work was celebrated in Tate Britian retrospect of the artist and filmmaker’s work.
There will be discussion of the themes Young Soul Rebels explores with guest Mahasin and the audience after the film with live captions.
Mahasin is the founder of Exhale.group, a grassroots non-profit creating safe spaces for QTIPOC (Queer/Trans/Intersex People of Colour) + in Glasgow, and Scotland, to dream, explore and connect, and co-founder of QTIPOC+ club night Mojxmma.
