Glasgow Film Festival 23 – Revisited
It’s impossible to see everything that GFF has to offer, but now here’s your chance! This May, the GFT are welcoming back four festival favourites, so now’s your opportunity to catch some titles you might have missed.
The Eight Mountains
12 – 25 May
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, The Eight Mountains is a staggeringly beautiful, uplifting tale of lifelong friendship. One Summer, 12-year-old Pietro and his family leave Turin to rent a house amidst the grandeur of the mountain country in Italy’s Aosta Valley. It is the village that Bruno calls home. The two boys forge a bond that will stretch over decades as Bruno stays rooted to the mountains and Pietro travels far and wide.
Plan 75
19 – 25 May
Set in a near dystopian future, Japan’s government launches ‘Plan 75’, a programme encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives, to rejuvenate the country’s rapidly-ageing population.
Chie Hayakawa’s remarkable debut intertwines the lives of three ordinary citizens as they face this new reality. An elderly woman, a young Plan 75 salesman and a Filipino care worker must come to terms with what it really means to live.
Lakelands
22 – 25 May
Winner of Best Irish Film at the Galway Fleadh, Lakelands tells the story of Cian (Éanna Hardwicke), a farmer’s son and star player in his local Irish football team. An evening out ends in a nightclub alley where he is brutally beaten by three men. He tries to brush it off as nothing serious, but is eventually forced to concede that his injuries could be life-changing.
Built around a deeply-felt performance from rising star Hardwicke (Normal People, Vivarium), Lakelands explores a macho culture in which feelings are rarely shared and vulnerability is considered a weakness.
Sisu
26 May – 1 June
From Jalmari Helander, director of Rare Exports and Big Game, Sisu is a bloody Second World War action epic that pits one hard-to-kill Finn against Nazi soldiers in Lapland.
After a solitary prospector strikes gold in the wilderness, he runs into a retreating detachment of Nazi soldiers who set their sights on claiming the bounty. Unfortunately for the stormtroopers, this is no ordinary miner, but a mythic one-man army epitomizing the quintessential Finnish concept of ‘sisu’ – white-knuckled courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
Let the pulverizing, shredding and spectacular gore on land, sea and air begin…
