Her Way – Glasgow Film Festival review by Pat Byrne
UK Premiere – 5 – 8 March, 2022 GFT and At Home 6 – 9 March, 2022
Laure Calamy (Call My Agent) plays the demanding role of Marie, a militant sex worker, fighting for her rights, and a mother desperate to find the fees to pay for her teenage son, Adrien (Nissim Renard), to attend a prestigious cookery school.
Unable to borrow from the bank, she crosses the border from their home in Strasgourg to work in a sex club in Offenbourg in Germany. Despite doing her best to fulfil the demands of the most distasteful and frightening clients and grasping every opportunity that comes her way, she struggles to get the 5000 euro deposit together to meet the payment deadline.
Marie is perfectly at ease with her choice of work and she is well practiced in her sexual wiles. Her son is less at ease and describes her as a hairdresser working from home. The relationship with her son is a mixture of aggravation, frustration and tenderness. Laure Calamy handles each aspect of the character well; normalising the life of prostitution with its genuine friendships and favours, such as from the transvestite lawyer, she calls on to school Adrien in recruitment skills.
Laure Calamy lights up the film with a vibrant and believable performance– she draws in the audience who empathise with her every step of the way.
