on chsil beach

25 May – 3 Jun, 2018

Adapted from Atonement author Ian McEwan’s Booker Prize-shortlisted novella of the same name, On Chesil Beach centres on young newlyweds Florence (Saoirse Ronan) and Edward (Billy Howle). In the early 1960s and deeply in love, the differences between the couple only become truly apparent on their wedding night-when they find themselves with starkly contrasting expectations. Dominic Cooke’s debut feature is a poignant British drama, anchored by compelling performances and stunning cinematography.

It is a tender and valuable film, well acted, with a shrewd eye for how naive you can be in your early 20s, how impatient, how pompous, how tragicomically un-self-aware.
