Disappearing Glasgow
Mon 27th November, 2017
Clydebank Library
at 7.30pm
Glasgow was the focus of a daring experiment with modernist architecture in the 1950s and 1960s, which involved people being cleared from 19th century slums and moved to vast tower block estates far from the city centre. They initially offered a huge improvement from the old slums but they were lacking facilities and a sense of community. These problems were compounded by a lack of investment and poor build quality, meaning these modernist edifices quickly fell into serious neglect.

Bernard MacLaverty has produced an incredible body of work with novels such as Cal, Lamb and Grace Notes, as well as highly acclaimed collections of short stories. His latest novel is Midwinter Break. A retired couple, Gerry and Stella Gilmore, fly from their home in Scotland to Amsterdam for a long weekend. A holiday to refresh the senses, to do some sightseeing and generally to take stock of what remains of their lives. Their relationship seems safe, easy, familiar – but over the course of the four days we discover the deep uncertainties which exist between them.

Angus McMillan was feted as a pioneer and explorer of the Australian frontier. He had left the Scottish Highlands in 1837, and inspired by his fame, his great-great-great niece, Cal Flyn, followed in his footsteps, only to discover that her ancestor was not the paragon of Victorian virtue that she had been led to believe. McMillan, a one time champion of the underdog and liberty was actually the Butcher of Gippsland, the leader of a band called the Highland Brigade, who wiped out the Aboriginal Gunai tribe.
