The Storytelling Power of Photographs Workshop with Eszter Biro at CCA, 29 November, 2016g
CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow G2 3JD
Tuesday, 29 November, 2016 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
‘Photographs are seductive and powerful objects. Since photography’s invention we can’t live without them and keep producing more and more in various carrier mediums. Photography’s power is mostly recognised by its connection to the past, as it provides us with a two-dimensional visual representation of a moment in the past. Since the digital age and social media it also have a short life in the presence, with real time sharing. This is a very public use of photography. There is however a more personal intimate sharing of photographs, especially family photos and fine art photography, which when it comes to surface have a more permanent presence; even before that it lingers there as an invisible silent layer. In my research I bring these to surface with the help of storytellers who makes sense of their family images, and make it relevant in their current present. I call this process confabulation. It is a collaborative journey I take with my participants, which takes time, courage and trust.
In this workshop I plan to show my personal journey – starting with my grandmother’s Vera’s bicycle ID see picture –, how I found confabulation and what did I learn by working with family photographs in relation to confabulation. I will show some examples from some of the collected confabulated stories to demonstrate it’s exciting power, and effect on cultural memory and history; and personal reflection and reconciliation. On the second part of the workshop, we will perform storytelling and confabulation on family photographs.’
