Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures
The controversial photographer’s life and legacy.
Friday 29 April – Monday 2 May, 2016
Running time: 1h48m
Robert Mapplethorpe was a controversial figure; his bold, unflinching and often graphic photography captured the late 20th Century New York underground at its most daring, pushing boundaries and breaking taboos. Using a 2016 retrospective as a springboard, this film recounts Mapplethorpe’s life, from his Catholic upbringing to his time with Patti Smith at the Chelsea Hotel and his growing interest in the New York BDSM scene. Rediscovered interviews and revelations from family and friends shed light on Mapplethorpe’s legacy and wider notions of decency.
