Glasgow Film Theatre Launches GFT Needs You Appeal
Glasgow Film Theatre launches GFT Needs You Appeal – calling for the support of its audience in the completion of an exciting renovation project, scheduled for summer 2016. The ‘GFT Needs You’ appeal will enable audiences to play a part in the building’s future, by contributing to the ambitious second phase of the historic building’s development. The first phase of the project, completed in 2013, included the award-winning third screen, as well as an accessible entrance lobby and box office.
The second phase will include the refurbishment of the upstairs bar and education suite, a second accessible lift, and butterfly stairwell in the foyer. Inspired by the original Art Deco and Art Moderne styles of the Cosmo, which opened in the Rose Street location in May 1939, the development will bring back a sense of grandeur and drama to the foyer. Designed by NORD Architecture, the renovation is designed to improve access to GFT for everyone.
The entire project will cost £3 million, and 90% of that target has already been reached. As a registered charity, GFT are appealing to the support of their audience to help raise the final 10% in order to make this exciting project happen.
HOW TO DONATE
People can support the GFT Needs You Appeal through collection boxes in the foyer, adding a donation to their ticket purchase at the box office, DONATE ONLINE or text GFTD16 followed by the value donated to 70070.
Jaki McDougall, Chief Executive of Glasgow Film, said:
‘As funding for the arts and charities gets tougher to find, we believe GFT needs to stand firmly on its own two feet to keep developing the diverse programme of film and festivals people of all ages enjoy at GFT. This appeal will help us to do exactly that. This major renovation project will bring about greater accessibility within Glasgow Film Theatre, completing the refurbishment begun in 2013 and secure GFT’s future for generations of film lovers to come. We’re delighted to be able to involve the audience, who we already know hold GFT dearly in their hearts, on this exciting journey.’
The campaign artwork features Alfred Hitchcock who has a special link with the Cosmo/GFT. Charles Oakley, who worked with Cosmo proprietor George Singleton and designed the Mr Cosmo mascot, met Hitchcock at Elstree Studios in the 1930s. Following this meeting, Hitchcock named his ‘merry widow killer’ in Shadow of a Doubt after Charles Oakley.
