Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) brings Shakespeare’s great tragedy Macbeth to life with bloodthirsty gusto. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, with a supporting cast including Paddy Considine as Banquo, David Thewlis as Duncan, and Jack Reynor as Malcolm. This visceral interpretation of ‘the Scottish play’ places emphasis on the physical conflict – transposing much of the action to the epic Scottish landscape, with battlefields steeped in the red haze of death. Fassbender excels as the brave general whose ambition leads him to guilt-ridden moral ruin, and Cotillard conveys Lady Macbeth’s power-hungry descent into madness with nuanced sophistication. Shot in locations including Skye and the Highlands, this is a brilliantly bold adaptation.
