Gergiev and Mariinsky Orchestra to perform historic Leningrad Symphony at launch of Glasgow's International Classical Season 2009-2010
"The event of a lifetime" The Herald
Gergiev will conduct the Mariinsky Orchestra in its first Scottish performance of the Leningrad Symphony - a signature work for him and the company - to launch Glasgow's International Classical Season at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. This great work was written as a response to the suffering endured by the Mariinsky's own city of St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) and was performed in Leningrad in 1942 during the Nazi siege of the city.
A charismatic and electrifying conductor, Gergiev became Artistic and General Director of St. Petersburg's Kirov Theatre (later renamed the Mariinsky) in 1988. As well as being Chief Conductor of the Mariinsky Orchestra, which is one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia, he is Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his artistic work with the Mariinsky, Gergiev has been heavily involved with fundraising for such projects as the recently built 1100-seat Mariinsky Hall, and intends to achieve complete renovations of the Mariinsky Theatre by 2010. The Mariinsky Orchestra has a distinguished history; Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov conducted the orchestra many times and it also premiered the Stravinsky's Scherzo Fantastique and The Firebird Suite.
In addition to the Leningrad Symphony, the orchestra will perform Henri Dutilleux's song cycle Correspondances with Mariinsky soprano Anastasia Kalagina. Dedicated to Sir Simon Rattle and Dawn Upshaw, the piece is based on various letters and contains a close link to Russia through its basis on a letter from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn to Mstislav Rostropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya about his time in the Gulag.
Launching in October 2009 and running through to May 2010, the International Classical Season will bring artists from all over the world to Glasgow, including Murray Perahia with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Joanna MacGregor, Jacques Loussier Trio, Pavel Haas Quartet, Sir James Galway's 70th Birthday Recital and Angela Hewitt with the Basel Chamber Orchestra. As well as four prestigious concerts at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the season features two mini-series of afternoon chamber ensemble performances and solo recitals at City Halls entitled The Bohemians and Romantic Bach, which will be staged in partnership with BBC Radio 3.
