One fascinating shop in Glasgow's West End, is David O'Neil's Phiten Scotland, tucked away at 47 Ruthven Lane, off Byres Road its discreet location is quite in contrast with the scale of its impact. Only established in December 2004, David has already built up an impressive clientele. Phiten is Scotland's only outlet for these innovative Japanese products and they are now also the official distributor for Ireland.
Lots of Westenders have discovered the benefits of Phiten products which use titanium to ease pain, promote athletic performance, increase strength and relax muscles. There is a large range of health and beauty products from massage cream to haircare plus a well designed and colourful selection of clothes and accessories - all impregnated with the wonders of titanium.
The theory is that placing titanium on the outside of your body balances its bioelectrical current, the crucial circuit that moderates muscle tension and blood flow. This balancing therefore helps your muscles to relax and stops the compression of blood vessels and nerve endings, and because it works with electricity, it does so very quickly. All of this leads to increased muscle performance and lower pain, an effect which becomes progressively greater the longer you use the products.
Although he is a true disciple, David does not do a big line on propaganda but prefers to hand out free samples so that people can experience the benefits of the Phiten products first hand. Another reason for the growing popularity of this merchandise is the ever-growing number of sports people who are keen to provide testimonials.
The Scottish Cricket Team have experienced the benefits of using the Phiten products and have recently won their first major tournament in many years. Is this a result of Phiten? - David has no doubts. Another devotee is Ernie Els, professional golfer, first spotted wearing the Phiten Titanium Necklace at the Sony Open in Hawaii, in 2004. Ernie believes that the Phiten products 'help to keep my body relaxed'. Another devotee is Toni MacIntosh Scotland's Women's Half Marathon Champion in 2004 - she is enthusiastic in her praise of her "magic" Phiten shorts.
A graduate of Glasgow University, 22 year old David discovered Phiten when he visited his cousin Gordon Watson (David's business partner) in Japan for a holiday after his graduation. Quick to appreciate the benefits of Phiten, David had a vision of how he could bring this Eastern phenomenon to Scotland. He has taken to entrepreneurship like a duck to water and very much enjoys the positive response to Phiten. Aided and abetted by his mother Nancy and with cousin Gordon providing mentoring from his Japanese base, David has been busy attending conventions, exhibitions and healthy living events. He is genuinely happy to offer a product that can ease pain and promote wellbeing and success. He also enjoys demonstrating the Phiten products and loves when people have a 'visibly surprised reaction'.
A natural entrepreneur David has been building up a wide range of contacts in the sports and healthcare world with alternative therapists and some major golf clubs supporting his expanding retail programme. He is also developing his website so that his company Metacog can sell Phiten products online. With support from Phiten in Japan and Europe David has created a unique venture down in Ruthven Lane, the products are attractively displayed in a pristine and organised environment. However, this is a friendly place where lots of people pop in to see what's new - and innovative products appear on the shelves with impressive regularity. Sometimes people come to browse or to pick up more supplies; they also bring along friends to introduce them to the wonders of the Phiten products. Everyone receives a warm welcome even if they are just popping in to say 'hello' to the O'Neils, their labrador pup Alfie - or the goldfish.
The free samples 'every day' are also quite an attraction and I've just sent some of the patches off to my sister in Canada so that she can try them out - they've certainly made me feel more relaxed.
Phiten Scotland are currently seeking stockists - please see details of how to get in touch below.
