New performance work from Artist Jade de Montserrat in partnership with The Hunterian

Artist Jade de Montserrat showcases her newly-commissioned live performance work ‘Mayday: That Sinking Feeling’ this spring at the University of Glasgow. The work is de Montserrat’s first ensemble performance piece and draws on her research into the short film ‘Springtime in an English Village’ (1944). Made by the Colonial Film Unit, the film depicts the crowning of a young Black girl as May Queen in a rural English school and was shown in African and Caribbean countries throughout the British Empire.

‘Mayday: That Sinking Feeling’ is de Montserrat’s first ensemble performance piece. This new work is part of a series of commissions which make connections to the work of Derek Jarman. de Montserrat will approach the complex historical document Springtime in an English Village in relation to Derek Jarman’s revisioning of the English landscape, as explored in the Hunterian exhibition ‘Digging in Another Time‘.

Jade de Montserrat is an artist who combines art and activism through drawing, painting, performance, film, installation, sculpture, print and text. In her practice she challenges structures of care in institutions and with the intersection of gender, race, class, and colonialism, often in the context of life in rural communities.

Supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.
