About the Event
If you were to ask any clubgoer in Glasgow, they would say that the city’s nightclubs were more than just places to go dancing. They were spaces where friendships were formed, new music discovered and communities built that have stood the test of time. But these venues that played an important role in Glasgow’s cultural and social life have disappeared from the city’s landscape.
The Glasgow’s Lost Nightclubs Exhibition explores this overlooked part of the city’s heritage through photographs, flyers, tickets, posters, clothing and other memorabilia, alongside memories shared by former club-goers. Together, these memories, photographs and materials offer a glimpse into the people and communities who brought these spaces to life.
What is lost when a nightclub closes? It is not simply a building or a business, but the disappearance of a meeting place, a creative space and a shared point of reference for a generation. This is particularly important at a time when Glasgow’s nightlife is changing, with a significant decline in Scotland’s nightclub sector since 2020.
With such dramatic changes occurring so quickly, archives and collections documenting this aspect of cultural history are failing to keep up. By bringing together objects and personal stories, this exhibition aims to shine a light on the importance of archiving this aspect of Glasgow’s nightlife.
It also invites you to consider whose histories are preserved, and whose might otherwise be lost. The places that made us are not famous buildings, monuments or landmarks. They are the everyday social and cultural spaces where we found friendship, belonging and creativity.
