Hilda Matheson, Head of Talks at the BBC in the 1920s, was committed to bringing listeners into contact with contemporary liberal thought and freedom of expression. But when she commissioned her lover, Vita Sackville-West and her bisexual husband Harold Nicolson, to speak on the subject of ‘Marriage’ it was a step too far for Director-General John Reith. Love With a Capital ‘L’ examines the clash between Reith and Matheson, two people with very different views both on public broadcasting and on personal – not to say, sexual – fulfilment.
