First a Girl, GFT
19 – 20 November, 209
Aspiring actors Victor (Sonnie Hale) and Elizabeth (Jessie Matthews) both want a part in a musical show, but the casting people are quick to turn Elizabeth away. Victor, meanwhile, gets offered the role of a man who disguises himself as a woman. However, when he unexpectedly loses his voice, he convinces Elizabeth to stand in for him. Before long, a show business agent notices and helps get Elizabeth’s career off the ground – although he, and everyone else, still thinks she’s a man. The original film that inspired the remake Victor/Victoria, First a Girl is a musical delight from start to finish.
Screening as part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
