Cinemasters: Powell and Pressburger GFT
Friday 20 October – Saturday 23 December, 2023
Celebrate one of the greatest and most enduring filmmaking partnerships: Michael Powell (1905-1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902-1988).
Bold, subversive and iconoclastic, their passionate collaborative artistic vision — spanning 24 films, including The Red Shoes (1948), A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and Black Narcissus (1947) — is a vital part of the fabric of British cinema history, which continues to inspire audiences and artists alike.
From 20 October,GFT is bringing some of their most enduring works back to the big screen, complete with some incredible 4K and 35mm screenings and one-of-a-kind events, including a multi-sensory screening of Black Narcissus. Also be welcoming a whole host of guests including BFI Film Classic author Pamela Hutchinson; Professor Ian Christie, author of Arrows of Desire: the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger; Scotsman film critic Alistair Harkness and archive activist film collective Invisible Women, plus introductions from Emeric Pressburger’s grandsons, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald and Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald.
