Backrooms at GFT
1 – 6 August, 2026
990. A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.
Its troubled proprieter, Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), ventures through and discovers a dimension beyond reality, made up of seemingly mundane, seemingly endless rooms.
When Clark disappears into the recesses of the rooms, his therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) ventures into the unknown to save him – and discovers the dark truths that lay within.
French classic Last Year at Marienbad is a similar masterclass in liminal, labyrinthine architecture where time and reality become unmoored. Both explore the psychological terror of characters wandering through infinite, identical corridors—whether a gilded 1960s chateau or endless yellow office hallways—searching for a past that may never have existed.
Last Year at Marienbad is screening at GFT from Saturday 1 August. Tickets available.
