ABOUT TO TAKE OFF / A PUNTO DE DESPEGAR
Dir. Lorena Best and Robinson Díaz / Perú / 2015 / 85’

CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

The documentary aligns with others that share similar concerns about how modernisation destroys places and ways of living —such as Under construction (Ignacio Agüero, 2000), In Vanda’s Room (Pedro Costa, 2000), or Work in Progress (Jose Luis Guerín, 2001). Best creates an intimate portrait of the dismantling of San Agustín by establishing solid personal ties with the filmed subjects that paved the way for a more horizontal and less traumatic shooting experience for those involved—a case in point of how the mode of production directly affects the formal result.

Lorena Best tells the story of the expropriation and demolition of San Agustín, a hamlet on the outskirts of Lima, due to the expansion of the international airport. The neoliberal alternative to a productive agricultural area is more asphalt and carbon emissions.
