The Seed Of The Sacred Fig
7 – 13 February, 2025
Nominated for the Oscar for Best International Feature and the Bafta for Best Film Not in the English Language. After being shot in secret, the announcement of The Seed of The Sacred fig led to threats of severe punishment and lengthy jail terms from the Iranian government forcing some cast and crew to leave the country. They continue to live in exile.
The screening at 7.15pm on Fri 7 Feb will have a special introduction and musical performance from Glasgow-based Iranian musicians Aref Ghorbani and Amir Hossein Feyzi.
The plot centres on Iman, an investigating judge at the revolutionary court in Tehran, where he is required to approve the judgements presented to him by his superiors – including death sentences – without assessing the evidence. For his and his family’s protection, Iman must keep his anonymity. As nationwide political protests against the authoritarian government intensify due to the death of a young woman, he finds himself surrounded by suspicion and paranoia, causing him to doubt even the women in his own family.
