Showing Up
17 – 24 March, 2024
The latest film from Kelly Reichardt (First Cow, Meek’s Cutoff) first screened at Cannes Film Festival in 2022, and is now finally available for UK cinemas to show — so we are taking the opportunity! Reuniting Reichardt with her regular collaborator Michelle Williams, Showing Up is an understated, character-centred drama that’s thoughtful and gently funny in equal measure. Williams plays Lizzy, a sculptor who, in the lead-up to an important show, must juggle the demands of erratic family members, an unreliable neighbour, her job at the art school, her unsympathetic cat and an injured pigeon. Insightful on both the life of an artist and the tiny but earth-shattering dramas that make up an average day, this is tender filmmaking for the soul.
