Valentine’s Day: Lovers Rock at GFT
Wednesday 14 February, 2024 – 8.50 p.m.
This Valentine’s Day GFT is delighted to have the chance to screen Steve McQueen’s acclaimed film Lovers Rock — arguably the highlight of Small Axe, the series of inter-related films McQueen made for the BBC in 2020. A sensory and sensual experience, the film takes us into the heart of the joys and troubles of London’s West Indian community in the early 1980s.
Set over a single evening at a house party in 1980, the film follows Martha (Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn) and Franklyn (Michael Ward) as they meet for the first time. Following an initially awkward encounter, we observe them fall for one another as they dance to a soundtrack of reggae, dub and lovers rock — the Black British subgenre of reggae, characterised by its soulful and romantic sound. Punctuated by incredible music moments, including a show-stopping ‘Silly Games’, Lovers Rock captures the joy of making connections and finding love, even in the midst of hardships.
