The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp + introduction

Sunday 12 November, 2023 3 p.m.
GFT is delighted to be welcoming filmmaker Kevin Macdonald and producer Andrew Macdonald — grandchildren of Emeric Pressburger — to introduce a screening of the film that Winston Churchill famously tried to ban: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
Released in 1943, it’s now acknowledged as one of the finest British movies ever made. However at the time its ambivalence towards the idea of righteous war and the presence of a ‘good’ German character made it one of Powell and Pressburger’s most politically daring films.
Mercilessly cut for its delayed US release, Martin Scorsese vowed in 1978 to track down an authentic print, if it existed. It is to him and fellow enthusiasts that we owe the rescue of this exquisite masterpiece, which has inspired countless filmmakers, including Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino.
Screening as part of Cinemasters: Powell and Pressburger season.
