Diasporic Creations + Q&A at GFT
Saturday 29 July, 2023 at 5:15pm
GFT is delighted to welcome Cuban filmmaker Jorge Egusquiza and Cuban artist Gretel Alfonso, Nicolás Guillén Landrián’s widow, for a Q&A after a screening of Inside Downtown and The End But Not The End. Conducted by Dr Jessica Gordon-Burroughs, Lecturer in Latin American Studies and Visual Culture at the University of Edinburgh, this UK premiere of the restoration of these two important video works marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Afro-Cuban film director Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938-2003).
Active at the Cuban National Film Institute, ICAIC, in its first decade, before his tragic censorship, Guillen Landrián was one of only three Afro-Cuban directors found among the Institute’s roster. In this short window of time, he directed over a dozen short documentaries, whose beauty and originality place him among Cuba’s most admired and enigmatic directors.
