Folk Horror Favourites
Two handpicked GFT folk horror favourites that drew inspiration from it, creating a similar mood of creeping terror around mysterious pagan rituals: Midsommar 27 – 28 June and Kill List 26 – 29 June.
One of the defining characteristics of Robin Hardy’s cult classic The Wicker Man is where its horror lies. Before its release in 1973, the genre had largely stuck to certain tropes: the paranormal or singular human menaces — not the inhabitants of a remote Scottish island. Arguably one of the most influential horror films of all time, The Wicker Man’s impact on the folk horror sub-genre is inescapable.
To mark 50 years since The Wicker Man’s release, bringing it back to the big screen in stunning 4K, with a special recorded event (Wednesday 21 June).
