Fanny and Alexande at GFT
Friday 27 and Sunday 20 December, 2024
Drawing heavily on director Ingmar Bergman’s own memories, Fanny and Alexander is an epic, dreamlike chronicle of an extended family in early 20th century Sweden. Told through the eyes of 10-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve) and his sister Fanny (Pernilla Allwin), the film begins with a Christmas Eve celebration and goes on to follow a tumultuous year of relationships, family intrigue and magical goings-on in the theatre the family owns.
Described by Bergman as ‘the sum total of my life as a filmmaker’, Fanny and Alexander is considered one of the director’s finest achievements, winning four Academy Awards including Best Foreign Language Film. Lighter and more accessible than a lot of his work, the film addresses Bergman’s characteristic themes of religion, moral dilemma and mortality with a uniquely playful, witty tone.
