Clara Sola at Glasgow Film Theatre
7 and 8 December, 2022
Winner of five prizes at the Swedish Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography, Nathalie Álvarez Mesén’s Clara Sola is a haunting tale of mysticism and sexual awakening.
Set in the lush, humid surroundings of the Costa Rican jungle, Wendy Chinchilla Araya makes an indelible debut performance as Clara, a neglected woman with learning difficulties who is believed to have spiritual powers. Clara lives with her teenage niece Maria (Ana Julia Porras Espinoza) under the command of her repressive elderly mother Fresia (Flor María Vargas Chavez). The arrival of an attractive younger man soon arouses a momentous sexual and spiritual awakening for Clara, along with a devastating jealousy.
