Wednesday 21 June, 2017 – Opening Night
Jay Phelps at the City of Music Studio, contemporary jazz fans cannot miss the chance to see Empirical trumpeter Jay Phelps at this year’s festival’s opening night, where he will be accompanied by Rick Simpson on piano, Mark Lewandowski on bass and John Scott on drums at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall’s City of Music Studio.
Strobes at St. Luke’s
With keyboardist Dan Nicholls (Squarepusher & Matthew Herbert), drummer Joshua Blackmore (Troyka) and guitarist Chris Sharkey (trioVD) Strobes are set to provide an electric set at iconic venue, St. Luke’s. One for fans of impressive live sampling and improv!
Thursday 22 June, 2-17 – Good Vibrations
Steve White in Conversation at O2 ABC2, having played with The Style Council, Paul Weller, The Who and Oasis need we say more? A chance to meet a true music legend.
The Greg Foat Group with Warren Hampshire (The Bees), looking to enjoy some 60’s inspired jazz in an intimate venue, look no further! This gig and album launch will see Internationally acclaimed jazz keyboardist Greg Foat collaborate with multi-instrumentalist Warren Hampshire, best known for his work in the Mercury Award Nominated, The Bees.
Friday 23 Jue, 2017 – Masters of Soul
Tony Allen ‘Tribute to Art Blakely’ at The Old Fruitmarket, the founding father of afrobeat, Tony Allen, realises a childhood dream of playing the music of drumming legend Art Blakely live, paying a poignant tribute to the man who initially inspired him to start drumming.
Sutra at the City of Music Studio, meaning ‘threads’ Sutra is a group of musicians, made up of Zoltan Lantos, Iain Copeland, Gus Stirrat and Malcolm MacFarlane, intent on bringing all the differing ‘threads’ from their collective experience together to form a new voice on the jazz circuit, focussed on exploration of soundscapes and ‘raga’ style improvisation with elements of traditional folk and jazz. Experimental music fans, this one’s for you!
Saturday 24 June, 2017 – Ginger Cats
An Evening with Ginger Baker at The Old Fruitmarket, the legendary Cream drummer will share stories with the audience before being joined on stage by an all star line-up including Pee Wee Ellis on Sax, Alec Dankworth (son of Dame Cleo Laine) on Bass and Abass Dodoo on Percussion.
The Bevvy Sisters at Drygate, the charismatic and vocally stunning trio will bring their unique concoction of soulful music and Scottish humour to Glasgow’s east-end, a must see!
ts Sunday 25 June, 2017 – Sweet Soul Sundays
Ryan Quigley with Strings at The Strathclyde Suite, for those who love the classic albums by Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, Ryan Quigley with strings features some of the most well known songs with brand new string arrangements penned by Quigley himself.
Stuart McCallum at The Hug and Pint, best known as a member of Cinematic Orchestra, Stuart takes influences from a wide range of artists from Pat Metheny to Bon Iver, using three different acoustic guitars to re-imagine and re-sculpt some well-known jazz standards into fresh shapes, as well as playing some of his own original compositions. THE perfect Sunday night jazz show.
The Glasgow Jazz Festival will take place in various exciting venues across the city including The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, The Old Fruitmarket, St Luke’s, Drygate and The Hug and Pint, all coming alive for five days of uninterrupted jazz.
