The Handmaiden: Director’s Cut, GFT, 2 April, 2017

Inspired by Sarah Waters’ best-selling novel ‘Fingersmith’, the latest film from visionary director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst, Stoker) is a ravishing, epic and sensual rollercoaster ride. 1930s Korea, in the period of Japanese occupation: a new girl, Sookee is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, Hideko who lives a secluded life on a large countryside estate with her domineering Uncle Kouzuki. But the maid has a secret. She is a pickpocket recruited by a swindler posing as a Japanese Count to help seduce the Lady to elope from him, rob her of her fortune, and lock her up in a madhouse. Everything seems to proceed according to plan until Sookee and Hideko discover unexpected feelings for each other. Nothing is what it seems in this twisting, thrilling and intricate drama.
This one-off preview of the Director’s Cut of Park Chan-wook’s critically lauded thriller contains 22 minutes of never-seen-before footage. The standard cut will be released on 14 April.
