As part of the ongoing Highlight Arctic project, Highlight Arts presents two days of film and expanded cinema spanning the circumpolar north, including new features from indigenous filmmakers in Scandinavia and Siberia.
Also in focus are rarely-screened works by two pioneering Scottish women filmmakers, both of whom worked extensively in the Arctic: influential documentarist Jenny Gilbertson and explorer, poet, botanist and all-around badass Isobel Wylie Hutchison. A specially-curated selection of their films will be accompanied by a newly-commissioned live score from acclaimed composer Atzi Muramatsu. Additionally, Gilbertson’s Shetland-shot silent feature, The Rugged Island, will be paired with Glenn Gould’s still-astonishing contrapuntal radio experiment, The Idea of North, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.
