18th Mar 2017 • 1:15PM – 2:15PM • Mitchell Library
Kapka Kassabova and Garrett Carr will be discussing their very topical books about the eastern and western borders of the EU.
Kapka Kassabova & Garrett Carr – Hard Borders
When Kapka Kassabova was a child, the border zone between Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece was rumoured to be an easier crossing point into the West than the Berlin Wall. In Border, Kapka Kassabova sets out on a journey through a hidden corner of the continent in the company of border guards and treasure hunters, entrepreneurs and botanists, refugees and smugglers. She traces the physical and psychological borders that criss-cross its villages and mountains, and goes in search of the stories that will unlock its secrets. In the wake of the EU referendum, the United Kingdom’s border with Ireland has gained greater significance. Over the past year, Garrett Carr has travelled this border, on foot and by canoe, to uncover a landscape with a troubled and a variety of characters who have made this liminal space their home.
